Plastic pipes carry sound less well than copper, so leaks can be quieter. We often combine acoustic testing with tracer gas on PPR, PEX and PE pipework.
Background noise from traffic, pumps and AC units can interfere. We may ask for appliances to be switched off briefly, or test at a quieter time.
On a pressurised pipe with a clear route, we can usually narrow the leak down to a small area so only a minimal opening is needed.
